Grace's Bravery on Organic Vegan Cottton 4ply Fingering Yarn

Grace's Bravery is part of my Angels of the North series celebrating overlooked great women of the North East.

In 1838 an ordinary daughter of a Farne Island lighthouse keeper became an overnight sensation and a symbol of Victorian bravery.

In the early hours of September 7th she spotted the wreckage and survivoriers of the ship Forfarshire from her room in Longstone Lighthouse. Her father decided that the weather was too rough for a lifeboat so Grace stepped up and helped her father row their small boat to the wreckage while giant waves crashed and thunder lashed down upon them. They managed to save 5 people (a further 9 survived and were rescued later) and row back to the lighthouse.

Word of this heroic rescue soon spread and a 22 year old woman from Bamburgh became famous as a symbol of bravery and can do spirit. You could find her face on biscuit boxes, she received marriage proposals and even received a letter and grant from Queen Victoria. Some think the attention was overwhelming and she became ill with consumption and died just 4 years after the shipwreck of the Forfarshire.

There is a monument to her where she is buried at Bamburgh Castle. It's a beautiful stone sculpture that points to her beloved Farne Islands, if you are ever in the North East it's definitely worth a trip to honor her valiant spirit.

I have based "Grace's Bravery" on the classic solid red and white of Longstone Lighthouse with added red speckles. This colour is slightly colour-pooling and would also work great at a christmas colour.

My 100% Organic Cotton 4ply yarn is a truly versatile yarn! Its perfect for shawls, hats, scarfs, blankets, clothing and especially toys or amigurumi. It is supersoft and easy to use. The premium quality ensure less splitting than inferior cotton yarns.  Each 100g skein has 400m and a recommended needle and hook size of 2mm-3mm. This yarn is suitable for machine washing.

I only use the best of the best when it comes to making hand dyed yarn. These yarns are hand dyed with professional grade Procion MX dyes or natural dyes and then rinsed after the dyeing process. Please check the label for washing instructions when possible. It is preferable to hand wash to preserve the colour. Please be aware that there may be a small amount of dye bleeding out in the first wash (although this is unusual because I am very thorough with my rinsing). Drying in direct sunlight can also fade the colour over time, so where possible, please avoid.

Please bear in mind that I dye skeins in small batches through kettle dyeing and hand painting. This leads to small variations even between skeins in the same dye lot so if you have a large project in mind, please contact me so that I can make sure you get skeins as closely matching as possible. Please bear in mind that whilst every effort is made to ensure the photograph accurately reflects the yarn colour monitors do vary.
