Mary's Escape on Vegan Cottton DK Yarn
Mary's Escape is part of my Angels of the North series celebrating women who have shaped the North East. The colour incorporates the icy blues and black coal dust that filled the sky of Mary Ann Macham's first glimpse of England.
Mary Ann Macham was a runaway slave from Virginia in America, who ended up living in North Shields after her arrival on Christmas day 1831 in Grimsby.
Born in 1802 to a black slave woman and a white slave owner, she crossed the Atlantic Ocean hidden aboard an English ship. The master of the ship then brought her to North Shields. She was taken in by the Spence family, who were Quakers, and worked as a domestic servant in the homes of various members of the family. Her arrival started conversations about the human cost of the slave trade and profiting on the suffering of others.
My 100% Cotton Double Knitting Light Worsted yarn is a truly versatile yarn! Its perfect for shawls, hats, scarfs, blankets, clothing and especially toys or amigurumi. It is supersoft and easy to use. The premium quality ensure less splitting than inferior cotton yarns. Each 100g skein has 200m and a recommended needle and hook size of 3.5mm-4mm. This yarn is suitable for machine washing.
I only use the best of the best when it comes to making hand dyed yarn. These yarns are hand dyed with professional grade Procion MX dyes or natural dyes and then rinsed after the dyeing process. Please check the label for washing instructions when possible. It is preferable to hand wash to preserve the colour. Please be aware that there may be a small amount of dye bleeding out in the first wash (although this is unusual because I am very thorough with my rinsing). Drying in direct sunlight can also fade the colour over time, so where possible, please avoid.
Please bear in mind that I dye skeins in small batches through kettle dyeing and hand painting. This leads to small variations even between skeins in the same dye lot so if you have a large project in mind, please contact me so that I can make sure you get skeins as closely matching as possible. Please bear in mind that whilst every effort is made to ensure the photograph accurately reflects the yarn colour monitors do vary.
